BARRY N. WEAVER
Barry N. Weaver began playing softball at his Dad’s suggestion
after he had been released from his professional baseball contract
with the Cleveland Indians.
After playing for half a season, Barry conquered his biggest
challenge which was adjusting from hard ball to softball.
During his career he played 10 years for South End in the
Lancaster Recreation League.
Within those years the team won the
Class “A” Fast Pitch State
Title in 1963 and runner-up in 1964.
In 1963, South End was losing to
Chester
in the bottom of the seventh inning 2-1.
With two outs and a man on first, Barry was fortunate to hit
one off the left center field fence at Colin Field.
This scored the runner from first, to tie the game, and Barry
was thrown out at home for the last out of the inning.
This was after Barry ran into the umpire at third.
They went on to win the state title in the ninth inning.
Barry later played for Thrifty Beverage for a number of years
and during that tenure the team captured the 1972 State Class “A”
Championship held in Erie, PA.
Barry led the team for the tournament with a .318 batting
average.
After retiring from competitive adult softball, Barry started
coaching girl’s softball.
He organized the Lancaster County Girl’s Softball Fast Pitch League
which is still in existence today.
When Barry reached the age of 60, he un-retired and started to
play in the Lancaster County Senior Modified League where he served as
Senior League President for four (4) years.
Barry is a member of Lampeter-Strasburg’s Sports Hall of Fame
and was inducted into the Lancaster County Softball Hall of Fame in
2007.
